FAA Reciprocating Powerplant Practice Test

In a radial engine, the operating temperature valve clearance is greater than the cold valve clearance. This phenomenon occurs due to the thermal expansion of engine components as they heat up during operation. As the temperature increases, metal parts, including the valve components, expand.

The valve clearance is the small gap between the valve stem and its corresponding rocker arm or pushrod. At cold temperatures, the clearance is set to ensure proper operation when the engine is cold. However, when the engine reaches its operating temperature, the increased size of the components results in greater clearances.

This adjustment is a critical aspect of engine design because it ensures that the valves do not stick or remain partially open due to insufficient clearance in the hot operating conditions. Proper valve clearance is essential for optimal engine performance, as it allows for effective sealing of the combustion chamber and efficient engine operation.

Thus, the correct answer reflects the understanding that components expand under heat, leading to greater clearance at operating temperatures compared to when the engine is cold.
